THE BATTLE OF SAMOBOR 1441.

After the death of King Albrecht Habsburg in 1439, throughout Croatia and Hungary, the fight for inheritance of the throne started. Ulrik II agreed with Elizabeth Celjski's military leader, Czech mercenary Ivan Vitovac, and with King Vladislav Jagelović, Stjepan Banić Lendavski. Two years later, these armies clashed near Samobor on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 1441, and the fierce battle ended with Vitovč's victory, which, after capturing the general Banić, procured considerable booty/loot. However, Queen Elizabeth dies 1442, thus forcing Ulrik II. to recognize Vladislav III. as a king and to dismiss everyone prisoners.

A faithful re-enactment of the battle every year is provided by medieval groups and extras dressed in replica armor from the 15th century. It takes place in March.

A fair is held where craftsmen and their products are presented: hat maker, basket maker, bread makers, herbalist, medicine man, coppersmith, blacksmith, wooden swords, shields, medieval precious stones.
